Where to stay in Agra

Where you sleep in Agra shapes your mornings. The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise, the fort opens at sunrise, and both are best seen early. Four areas hold most of the accommodation that visitors use: Taj Ganj, the area around the Taj east gate, Fatehabad Road and Sadar Bazaar.

If you are building a whole trip, compare our Agra tours with your hotel choice, because pickup points and gate times decide how early you start.

Questions to ask before you book

A hotel's location tells you less than its answers.

How do I reach the gate before sunrise?

Ask how early a taxi or rickshaw can pick you up, and who arranges it. Neighbourhood names do not tell you how long the way takes, so ask for the route to the east or west gate.

How does my car reach the hotel?

Polluting motor vehicles are not allowed within 500 m of the Taj Mahal. If your hotel is close to the monument, ask where a car transfer ends and how your luggage gets from there.

Is a Taj view confirmed?

A Taj view cannot be assumed, even in a hotel close to the monument. Count on it only if the hotel confirms it for your room and dates.

Is breakfast early enough?

Both monuments open at dawn. Ask whether the hotel serves an early breakfast or packs one, and whether the front desk is staffed at that hour.

What about luggage?

Ticket counters and luggage storage are at both Taj Mahal visitor gates. Take a government ID with you. Ask the hotel whether it can hold bags after checkout.

Plan the stay around the gates

Visitors enter the Taj Mahal through the east or west gate. Ticket counters open one hour before sunrise, and entry begins 30 minutes before sunrise. The Agra Fort has one entrance for visitors, the Amar Singh Gate, and is open from sunrise to sunset every day, Fridays included.

A hotel close to one gate does not make the other monument close. The fort and the Taj Mahal are about 2.5 km apart, so budget transport for the second one. Our Delhi to Agra guide covers the last stretch from the station.

How long to stay

By type of trip.

One night

Enough for the Taj Mahal at sunrise and the fort in the morning. Choose Taj Ganj or the east gate area, and book the night before a day when the Taj is open.

Two nights

Adds a half day for Itimad-ud-Daulah and Mehtab Bagh, or a full day for Fatehpur Sikri. See things to do in Agra for what fits.

A Friday in the middle

The Taj Mahal is closed to day visitors on Fridays. Use that day for the fort, the tombs and the bazaars, and keep another morning for the Taj.

Agra hotels: frequently asked questions

Which area is best for the Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal?

For most first-time visitors, Taj Ganj and the east gate area are the place to start, because the Taj Mahal is the main reason for most trips. Fatehabad Road suits higher-end hotels on a main road, and Sadar Bazaar suits a stay in a market area.

Should I stay near the fort or near the Taj Mahal?

Near the Taj Mahal if the monument is your main reason to visit, as the two sit about 2.5 km apart and the Taj has the earliest start. The fort has one visitor entrance and opens at sunrise.

Do I need a hotel in Agra, or can I visit from Delhi in a day?

A day trip is possible, and our Taj Mahal day trip from Delhi guide shows how. A night in Agra gives you the sunrise hours and a buffer for fog or delays.

Can I count on a Taj Mahal view from my room?

No, unless the hotel confirms it for your room. Haze and fog can also hide the monument in winter.

How far is my hotel from the fort?

It depends on the area and the route. The station to the fort is about 3 to 5.5 km, and the fort and the Taj Mahal are about 2.5 km apart. Check the route on a map before you book.
