Agra Fort vs Red Fort: the short answer
The Red Fort of Agra is Agra Fort, a red sandstone fortress on the Yamuna in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. The Red Fort in Delhi is another monument: the palace fortress of Shahjahanabad, built under Shah Jahan next to the older fort of Salimgarh. They are not interchangeable places, and tickets for one do not work at the other.
Both are known as Lal Qila, which means Red Fort. That is why a search for red fort agra turns up pages about Delhi, and the other way round. Always name the city. If you are planning a visit to Agra, start with Agra Fort tickets.

Red Fort Delhi: what it is
The Red Fort in Delhi is the palace fortress of Shahjahanabad, the city Shah Jahan founded. It stands next to Salimgarh, an older fort. It is UNESCO listed as the Red Fort Complex since 2007. Building began in 1638 or 1639 and ended in 1648.
This site covers Agra only. For Delhi's Red Fort tickets and hours, look for a guide to Delhi. What matters for your planning is that the two forts are about 225 km apart by road.
Agra Fort: what sets it apart
Agra Fort stands on the site of an earlier fort called Badalgarh and was rebuilt by Akbar in red sandstone between 1565 and 1573. Shah Jahan then added white marble palaces and mosques, among them the Musamman Burj, from which you look toward the Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan himself ended his life confined in this fort, held there by his son Aurangzeb until his death in 1666.
Inside, the Jahangiri Mahal, the Diwan-i-Am, the Diwan-i-Khas and the Khas Mahal are the buildings to know. You can read about them on the inside page, and the long story is on the history page. For the numbers, see Agra Fort facts.

Plan the route โRed Fort Agra and Delhi: frequently asked questions
Is Agra Fort the same as the Red Fort?
Agra Fort is often called the Red Fort of Agra, because of its red sandstone. The Red Fort in Delhi is a different monument in a different city. Lal Qila can refer to either, so name the city.
Which Red Fort is older, Agra or Delhi?
Agra's. Akbar rebuilt Agra Fort between 1565 and 1573. Delhi's Red Fort was built under Shah Jahan, from 1638 or 1639 to 1648.
Are both forts UNESCO World Heritage Sites?
Yes. Agra Fort was listed in 1983 and the Red Fort Complex in Delhi in 2007.
Can I use one ticket for both forts?
No. They are separate monuments in different cities, about 225 km apart by road, with their own tickets.
Which fort has the view of the Taj Mahal?
Agra Fort. From the marble pavilions on the river side, including the Musamman Burj, you look toward the Taj Mahal, although haze and fog can hide it.
Can I see both forts in one day?
It is a long day. The road distance is about 225 km, roughly 5 hours each way, so most visitors see Delhi's fort on one day and Agra Fort on another.
