Musamman Burj at a glance

The Musamman Burj is a marble tower and pavilion inside Agra Fort. It is tied to the captivity of Shah Jahan, who was held in the fort until he died in 1666, and to a view of the Taj Mahal. It sits on the river side of the fort, behind the Khas Mahal.

The tower is part of a fort visit. You pay the Agra Fort entry fee, which is INR 650 for foreign visitors on a regular day in 2026, and you enter through the Amar Singh Gate. The Agra Fort tickets page has the full list.

The Taj Mahal is about 2.5 km from the fort. In clear air it shows as a pale dome and minarets in the distance. In haze or winter fog it can disappear, so do not plan the visit around a guaranteed sighting.

The marble tower and its setting

The pavilion has white marble walls and arches with inlay work. A balcony with carved columns looks out over the river plain. In front of it stands the Khas Mahal, the white marble palace.

Whether you can climb into the tower, step onto the terrace or enter every room beside it depends on access on the day. Do not assume that every part is open. Ask at the Amar Singh Gate or look for signs. The inside of the fort page lists the other palaces and halls you can plan around.

If you want the story told on the spot, a guide helps. Compare current Agra Fort tours before you go.

Shah Jahan's captivity

Aurangzeb, Shah Jahan's son, held his father in Agra Fort until Shah Jahan died in 1666. That was about eight years of captivity. The Musamman Burj is the pavilion tied to that captivity, and its Taj Mahal view is why visitors seek it out.

Shah Jahan had added white marble palaces and mosques to the fort. The marble around the tower comes from that time. The Agra Fort history page explains who built what and how the fort passed from the Mughals to the Marathas and the British.

The Taj Mahal view from the fort

The pavilions of the fort look toward the Taj Mahal. The view runs across the Yamuna to the dome and minarets of the Taj. Ordinary photography is allowed. Tripods and extra lights need written permission.

Air quality matters more than the time of day. Winter brings fog and raised air pollution. On a hazy morning the Taj can fade to a pale outline.

You can check seasons and temperatures on the Agra weather page. For a close look at the Taj, the Taj Mahal tickets page explains the entry rules, including the Friday closure for tourist day visits.

When the Taj disappears

On a foggy winter day the view can fail. The photo shows the Taj Mahal barely visible behind trees in heavy fog, seen from the fort.

If the view is your main goal, pick a clear day, go early in the day while the fort is open from sunrise, and keep your plan flexible. If the Taj is hidden, the red sandstone and white marble around you are still the main reason to be in the fort.

Planning your visit to the Musamman Burj

What to set up before you go.

Check the day, not the guidebook

Which rooms, terraces and steps are open can change. Treat the tower and its terrace as something to confirm at the gate, not as a promise.

Go early

The fort opens at sunrise. Early light and cooler air help both the walk and the view.

Skip a Friday for the Taj

The fort is open on Fridays, but the Taj Mahal is closed to tourist day visits on that day. Plan your Taj visit for another day.

Stay on the open routes

The military part of the fort is closed, and only the Amar Singh Gate is a visitor entrance. Do not climb on walls or damage surfaces.

For most visitors the simplest plan is the fort in the early part of the day, then the Taj Mahal on another day or at another time, with a clear sky as the one thing to hope for.
