Fatehpur Sikri from Agra
Fatehpur Sikri was Akbar's residence city, about 36–40 km west of Agra. UNESCO listed it in 1986. It is a common day trip from Agra, and the Jama Masjid is part of the same ensemble as the palace buildings.
Entry for foreign visitors is INR 610 on a regular day in 2026, INR 600 on Fridays. Indian citizens pay INR 50. The site is open from sunrise to sunset every day, and the dargah stays open longer. The Taj Mahal is closed to tourist day visits on Fridays, but Fatehpur Sikri is not, which makes Friday a good day for this trip.
The easiest way to book is a guided day trip or a combined Agra day. The tours below show current options. Compare them with Agra tours that also include the fort.

Our picks: Fatehpur Sikri tours
The guided visit suits you if Fatehpur Sikri is the only goal, and the private tour is flexible if you want your own pace. The longer tour combines it with the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort in one day, with all monument fees extra. For the first two, ask before booking whether the Fatehpur Sikri entry fee is included.

Akbar's capital city
Akbar made Fatehpur Sikri his residence and court city. The capital period ran roughly from 1572 to 1585, about 10 to 14 years.
The city is built in red sandstone. That ties it to Akbar's work at Agra Fort, where he rebuilt the older fortress in the same stone. You can see both in one trip and compare how the two sites use the same material.

What to see in Fatehpur Sikri
Three things stand out.
Buland Darwaza
The monumental gate is 54 m high and made of red sandstone. It is linked to Akbar's victory in Gujarat.
Jama Masjid
The mosque belongs to the same ensemble as the palace buildings. In the courtyard in front of the gate you see tombs.
The palace buildings
The five-storey Panch Mahal in red sandstone is the easiest building to recognise among the palace buildings.
The fee below is for the palace complex. Do not assume the same ticket rule covers the mosque and the dargah, and ask at the counter if you plan to enter them.

| Visitor | Regular day | Friday | After a Taj Mahal visit |

| SAARC and BIMSTEC visitors | INR 50 | INR 40 | INR 40 |
| Other foreign visitors | INR 610 | INR 600 | INR 600 |
Children under 15 enter free. The "after Taj Mahal" column is a reduced rate for visitors who have been to the Taj Mahal. It is not a combined ticket. For most visitors from outside South Asia, plan on INR 610, or INR 600 on a Friday.
Getting to Fatehpur Sikri from Agra
The site lies 36–40 km west of Agra. Buses leave from ISBT and Idgah in Agra, and taxis run too. Check the timetable and fare on the day before you plan around them.
If you drive, private vehicles park below the site and authorised battery buses take you up to it. The parking and shuttle prices change, so ask at the stop.
Use authorised guides only. Unlicensed middlemen approach visitors near the car park, and a polite no is enough. A guided trip from Agra can also take care of the transfer.

How to plan the day
Four choices that shape the trip.
Pick the day
Fatehpur Sikri is open every day, including Fridays. On a Friday the Taj Mahal is closed to tourist day visits, so this trip fits that day well.
Add the fort
Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri are both open from sunrise to sunset. For a foreign visitor the two entries come to about INR 1,260 on a regular day in 2026: INR 650 for the fort and INR 610 here.
Agra Fort tickets →Choose the guide
Book through an authorised guide or a guided trip. Do not accept an offer from someone who approaches you near the car park.
Ask about the mosque and dargah
The dargah stays open longer than the rest of the site. Hours and fees for the mosque and dargah can differ from the palace complex, so ask at the counter.
For most visitors the simplest plan is a guided trip that starts early and returns to Agra the same day, with the fort on a different morning.
