How Agra tours fit together

Most Agra tours combine the Agra Fort, the Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri. These are three separate monuments with separate tickets, and all three belong to the Agra Circle of the Archaeological Survey of India. A tour adds a guide and transport. Whether it also covers the entry tickets differs by offer, so read the inclusions before you pay.

Two rules shape every plan. The Taj Mahal is closed to tourist day visits on Fridays, while the Fort stays open. And there is no joint Fort and Taj ticket. A lower Fort fare applies after a Taj visit (INR 600 instead of INR 650 for foreign adults), but you still buy both entries.

Our picks: Agra tours compared

Pick by the day you have: the private Taj Mahal and Agra Fort tours and the Delhi day trip combine both sights, while the sunrise tour is Taj Mahal only. If you want something other than monuments, the street food walk is a few hours in the old city, and the Yamuna boat ride adds a view of the Taj from the river. Check each card for monument tickets, which many tours include only with the matching option.

Indian citizens pay INR 50 at the Fort, the Taj and Fatehpur Sikri, and visitors from SAARC and BIMSTEC countries have their own lower fares. Children under 15 enter free. For most first-time visitors, a good base is the Fort and the Taj on separate halves of one day, or on two days if you want to avoid rushing. Add Fatehpur Sikri as its own trip on a day when the Taj is closed.

The tour types in detail

What each one involves.

Agra Fort and Taj Mahal in one day

The classic pairing. The Fort opens from sunrise and has one visitor entrance, the Amar Singh Gate. The Taj Mahal is a short distance away, roughly 2.5 km from the Fort. Plan the Taj for a day other than Friday, and keep in mind that the Taj ticket counters close 45 minutes before sunset.

Taj Mahal tickets and rules โ†’

Sunrise at the Taj Mahal

The Taj opens 30 minutes before sunrise, and the ticket counters open one hour before. Winter fog and haze can hide the building, so no sunrise view is guaranteed. From the Fort you can see the Taj across the Yamuna in clear air.

Musamman Burj and the Taj view โ†’

Fatehpur Sikri

Akbar's red sandstone city, a UNESCO site since 1986, lies 36 to 40 km west of Agra. Private cars park below the complex and authorised electric buses run up to the entrance. Use authorised guides only and avoid unlicensed middlemen.

Itimad-ud-Daulah and Mehtab Bagh

The marble tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah stands on the left bank of the Yamuna, in a garden laid out in four parts. Mehtab Bagh lies on the opposite bank from the Taj Mahal, and its lawns look toward it. Both fit into a half day.

Gardens and tomb โ†’

Taj Mahal by night

The night visit is a separate ticket with its own rules. It runs on full moon nights and the two nights before and after, never on Fridays or during Ramadan. Foreign adults pay INR 750.

Night visit rules โ†’

Day trip from Delhi

Agra works as a long day from Delhi by train or car. The Gatimaan Express takes 1 hour 40 minutes one way and does not run on Fridays.

What to check before you book

The offers look alike. The details differ.

Date and Friday

A tour that includes the Taj Mahal cannot run on a Friday. If your only free day is a Friday, choose a Fort and Fatehpur Sikri day instead.

Entry tickets

Look for a line saying whether entries are included. If they are not, add the fares from the table above. The main mausoleum of the Taj is an optional extra of INR 200.

Guide and pickup

Check the guide language, the meeting point and the pickup time. Pickup at the hotel and the end point should be written in the offer.

Shopping stops

Marble inlay, called parchin kari, is a local craft, and workshops in Agra show it. A visit is your choice and not part of any entry rule.

Agra tours: frequently asked questions

What is included in an Agra tour?

That depends on the offer. Common building blocks are a guide, transport and sometimes the entry tickets. Read the inclusions and add the fares from the table above if entries are not covered.

Can I visit the Taj Mahal on a Friday?

No. The Taj Mahal is closed to tourist day visits on Fridays. The Agra Fort stays open, with a Friday fare of INR 600 for foreign adults.

Is there a combined ticket for the Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal?

No. Each monument has its own ticket. A lower Fort fare applies after a Taj visit. It is a rate and not a joint ticket.

How far is Fatehpur Sikri from Agra?

About 36 to 40 km to the west. Buses leave from the ISBT and Idgah stands, and taxis run the same route. Check current times and fares on the day.

How much time do I need in Agra?

Many visitors cover the Fort and the Taj in one day and keep Fatehpur Sikri, Itimad-ud-Daulah and Mehtab Bagh for a second. A second day also gives you a spare if the Taj day falls on a Friday.

Is this the official website of the Agra Fort?

No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not run by the Archaeological Survey of India, by UP Tourism or by any monument operator.
