Agra Fort at a glance
Agra Fort is a red sandstone fortress in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, on the bank of the Yamuna. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, and UNESCO describes it as an imperial city inside a sandstone fortress. You will also see it called Lal Qila, Fort Rouge and Qila-i-Akbari. The Taj Mahal lies about 2.5 km away. From the marble pavilions inside the fort you look toward it across the river, though haze and winter fog can hide it.
This guide covers tickets and timings, tours, the history from Akbar to Shah Jahan, the palaces inside, the Musamman Burj, the Taj Mahal, day trips from Delhi, the Golden Triangle, Fatehpur Sikri, Itimad-ud-Daulah and Mehtab Bagh, the weather, getting there and where to stay. Prices are in Indian rupees (INR), for 2026, and they change.

A few things to know before you go
Five points that save time on the day.
Friday is a fort day
The fort is open every day, Fridays included. The Taj Mahal is closed to tourists on Fridays, so a Friday works well for the fort, and the Taj can wait for another day.
Taj Mahal hours โTwo tickets, not one
There is no joint ticket for the fort and the Taj Mahal. Lower fort fares apply after a Taj visit: INR 600 instead of INR 650 for foreign visitors.
Ticket prices โTotals at the counter
For foreign visitors the total comes to INR 650, to INR 550 (INR 500 plus INR 50), or to INR 650 plus a separate INR 500 fee. Ask at the counter which total applies. It takes UPI and cards.
How the totals differ โOne entrance
Visitors enter through the Amar Singh Gate. The military part of the fort is closed to the public, and a building named in a guide is not always open to walk into.
What you can see inside โThe evening show
A light and sound show runs in the evening, in Hindi and in English. Check the current timetable before you plan an evening around it.
Show programme โBeyond Agra
Agra is one corner of the Golden Triangle.
Most trips that include Agra continue to Jaipur. For that city's forts and palaces, see Amber Fort and Hawa Mahal. This site stays with Agra Fort and the places you can reach from it. Our Golden Triangle page explains how the three cities fit together.

Agra Fort: frequently asked questions
Is Agra Fort open on Fridays?
Yes. The fort is open from sunrise to sunset every day, roughly 06:00 to 18:00. The Taj Mahal is closed to tourists on Fridays. See the tickets and timings page.
How much is the Agra Fort entry ticket in 2026?
The regular fare is INR 650 for foreign visitors, INR 90 for SAARC and BIMSTEC visitors and INR 50 for Indian visitors, per person. Fridays and visits after the Taj Mahal have lower fares. Children under 15 enter free. Details are on the tickets page.
Is there a combined ticket for Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal?
No. They are two separate tickets. The lower fort fares after a Taj visit are a reduced tariff, not a joint ticket. See Taj Mahal tickets.
Can I see the Taj Mahal from the fort?
Yes, from the marble pavilions on the river side, including the Musamman Burj. The Taj Mahal is about 2.5 km away. Haze and winter fog can hide it completely, so there is no guaranteed view. More on the Musamman Burj page.
Which entrance do I use?
The Amar Singh Gate is the visitor entrance. Other gates, such as the Delhi Gate, are part of the fort's history but are not entrances for visitors.
Is agra-fort.org the official website of the fort?
No. This is an independent travel guide. It has no connection to the Archaeological Survey of India, Uttar Pradesh Tourism, the Government of India, any tour operator or any hotel.
